Here are the hours of operation for the footbridge...
See when it's up or down...
I like the bridge -- it's very Golden Gatish
Here's looking back from the wards island side
Last chance to leave...it's spooky here...not only
did they buried 100's of thousands of paupers here
It's not called Wards because of the mental wards here...
Some of the most dangerously sociopathic minds live here...
It's called Ward's island because a guy named Ward used
to live here...(notice the large quail hen in the foreground)
Here's a close up of that hen...
Once you're on Wards Island, you can take this
recently paved a bike trail along the harlem river
It's smooth sailing
You can hardly see the psycho ward behind the trees (but it's there)
The path ends in this turn about (notice the arrows)
Even though the path continues, there is this sign...
I gave that sign "the finger" as I peddled on...
You come to the short board walk...over the inlet
this photo was taken at point C on the map below
Circus Sole is here...there is also a state of the art track and field arena here
You can catch a ferry back to Manhattan from here...
I don't know where it docks back in NYC...probably 34th street by NYU hospital
You can keep peddling on past the circus.
Until you're looking back south at the tribourgho Bridge to 125th street
You can also see the Willis Avenue Bridge into the Bronx
point D on the map below
That's the bronx right there, across the creek...
it's an island alright...(notice the heron bird in the water)
Further around, there is a footbridge over to the Bronx
I rode to the top but then turned back around to finish exploring Wards....
There were also kids going back and forth over this water pipe system
E on the map
It's a very urban creek...
Very...which separates Wards Island from the Bronx
F on the map
I peddled under this train bridge for awhile...
Got to the water treatment plant...this cleans all
the water of Manhattan...kind of smelly...
This is another smoke stack, I think it's for powering the Ward facilities...
I got to the end of the train bridge...
G on Map below
Gang markings...you need a mountain bike to get back here...
It's kind of nice. They call this waterway Hell's Gate
Ironically, it's from the dutch who called the
passage HellesGeht, meaning beautiful path
Strange currents go though here so the english called it hells gate.
Today there are nice skyline views...and plenty of kids are playing
Looking up at the tribourgho bridge
People sailing and jet skiing...
That's hells gate from the south part of the island...
They even have horses here...
